Social and societal responsibility

STIB wants to be a responsible business, i.e. a business on which clients can count and which is able to meet its economic, social and environmental challenges and contribute to those of the Brussels-Capital Region.

Economic commitment

Participating in investments

5.2 billion euro of investment are planned for improving mobility in Brussels during the 2015-2025 period. The largest part of these large-scale investments will be financed by the annual allocation of investments awarded to STIB by the Brussels-Capital Region and the amounts allocated by the Federal government under the cooperation agreement with Beliris. As a responsible public company, STIB is also expected to help fund these investments, as far as its resources allow, thanks primarily to savings made under the Drive programme.

In 2016, the drive programme provided savings of 37.8 millions euro.
The total cumulative amount for 2013-2016 was 100.3 millions euro.

The Drive Programme

The Drive programme establishes the plan for annual savings to be made by STIB during the period covered by its management contract, using measures to optimise purchases, maintenance activities, energy consumption, reduce absenteeism, etc. In 2013, STIB committed to saving 116 million euro (to be indexed) in 5 years. The full amount was reinjected in investments in mobility in Brussels.

Environmental commitment

Increasingly clean vehicles

STIB is continuing to replace its fleet. The new buses operating on the network are increasingly environmentally-friendly. Trams and metros are powered by electricity and as a result do not directly produce any polluting emissions. Furthermore, STIB gets its energy from a supplier which is asked to prove through Guarantee of Origin certificates that it produces or purchases renewable electricity in quantities equivalent to its consumption.

Reducing the impact of its activities

By offering an increasingly high standard of public transport, STIB is providing a sustainable alternative to cars. It is also helping to reduce car congestion and, as a result, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is improving air quality and quality of life in the city. Over the last few years, STIB has been working to manage and reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. In its Management Contract, STIB has undertaken to reduce its direct energy consumption for the period 2013-2017 by 8.5% compared to 2010, excluding changes in activity. From now until 2030, STIB also aims to reduce its direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases by 40% per place kilometre, thanks to Ecodrive (ecological driving in metros and buses), the purchase of new vehicles and by recovering the braking energy from metro trains, to name a few initiatives.

Energy performance

The energy indicator represents the development of STIB's energy performances compared with the 2010 situation, all other things being equal. Energy efficiency is calculated in 5 areas: bus, tram, metro, electricity and fuel for infrastructures. The overall performance of STIB is calculated by adding the gains in each area in proportion to its contribution to the total consumption. Between 2010 and 2016, STIB's energy performance increased by 14%.

ISO 14001 certification

STIB's objective is to obtain ISO 14001 certification for all its activities by the end of 2017. This certification specifies the requirements relating to environmental management. This means that it aims to encourage companies to control the impact of their activities on the environment and demonstrate the effectiveness of both the management systems and the continuous improvement of their environmental procedures, in a way that respects legal provision and takes into account the context and stakeholders. In 2016, STIB formalised its environmental management processes (waste, energy, water, soil, purchasing, legal compliance, etc.). It carried out an evaluation of the legal compliance and operational management of its workshops and depots and trained its local waste management officials.

Societal engagement

22,000 people reached

Although STIB's primary objective is to achieve its mission as a transporter by offering an increasingly high standard of accessible public transport, it also has to deal with a number of societal issues on a daily basis. As a responsible business, STIB attempts to deal with these issues. It has formed specialised partnerships over the last few years, particularly with stakeholders from associations. It carries out a range of actions aimed at different target groups, including vulnerable people, schools and associations. 22,000 people were reached in 2016.

Meeting schools

The "Smart Move" campaign, in collaboration with the Promo Jeunes non-profit association, has continued throughout the school year. It aims to raise awareness among schoolchildren in the Brussels-Capital Region, so that they adopt good, responsible behaviour on public transport. The 2016-2017 event is open to students in years 5 and 6 of primary school and years 1, 2 and 3 of secondary school and includes 44 classes and 815 participants. Students in the fifth and sixth years of secondary school took part in the Responsible Young Passengers (RYP) campaign. The young people had to give their co-students an example of responsible and good citizen behaviour while travelling on public transport. Eight schools (ten classes) are taking part in the project in 2016-2017. School-children and students also came to see behind-the-scenes during visits organised by the public relations unit, getting to know more about STIB. 36 school visits were organised in 2016.

Combating incivility

STIB is working closely with local associations to combat incivility and vandalism in and around stations and allow the positive reappropriation of spaces. One example of this is Aumale station in Anderlecht, where STIB is working with the non-profit association Safa. Workshops and meetings are held several times a week in the station. They allow dialogue to be established between passers-by and members of the non-profit association. In 2016, 1,537 people took part in the various activities on offer, including a "White Tornado" operation and the inauguration of a fresco created by children. A similar type of collaboration exists at Etangs Noirs station in Molenbeek, where STIB renewed its collaboration with the Centrum West association in 2016.

STIB champions the disadvantaged

STIB took part in Operation Thermos again in 2016. The non-profit association of the same name makes and distributes hot meals to vulnerable people from 1 November to 30 April. STIB volunteers organised several help-the-homeless evenings, from preparing meals to distributing them and also transporting volunteers and food to the distribution point. In 2016, 20 STIB teams served 1,827 meals. During periods when the metro station was closed, these meals were distributed in two articulated buses provided by STIB. STIB is also continuing its collaboration with several other associations (Infirmiers de rue, Bij Ons and Médecins du monde), in order to help people living rough on the network and support and train its field agents in their everyday work.

Network accessibility

Making the network accessible to everyone, including people with reduced mobility, is one of the objectives of the Brussels public transport company. STIB is working closely with the Brussels-Capital Region and with the community sector to achieve this. Arts-Loi, Schuman, Diamant, Gribaumont, Louise, George-Henri and Merode are now among the stations accessible to platform level by one or more lifts. With the addition of the seven new stations, the platforms of 45 stations can now be accessed from surface level, either directly or by lift. Bus line 79 joins lines 48, 59, 71, 84 and 95 in being designated an AccessiBus. On these bus lines, the drivers have been trained in welcoming people in wheelchairs, the infrastructure has been checked throughout the route, the signage at all stops has been adapted and particular attention has been paid to the vehicles' access ramps.

TaxiBus

TaxiBus, the door-to-door service for people with disabilities, was created almost 40 years ago and updated in 2014. It is available from Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 1 am and made 71,834 journeys in 2016. Around twenty drivers, as well as managerial and support staff, ensure the smooth running of the service. STIB has also strengthened its partnership with Brussels' taxis, which manage some of the journeys.
